“In the mountains, there you feel free.” -T.S. Eliot
An excerpt from a piece I started writing in the spring, around the same time I filmed this: “My sighs are becoming more like growls. My dancing, like Munch’s Scream. It confused me as a child but I think I understand it now. I’m sighing and spinning, jutting unevenly through space.
There is so much grief in this world, how does everyone hold it in?”
Yesterday I finally decided to try to put together some film clips I had, as I’ve been trying to challenge myself to make some short videos. Originally, I’d planned to use them with a different song, but they seemed to fit well here. It’s neat to look back at last year and see some themes fitting together: repetition, leading to ritual. Swimming, dancing, and being in the mountains helped me process my sadness and grief; even still i find it so important for handling the reality of current events. As Beth Pickens says, “your art will save your life.”
Thanks to my friend Elin for filming the dancing scenes! The song is Midnight by Coldplay.
